My Scenic Drives
Are you planning a visit to California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington State, or Wyoming? There is a new trip planning service called "My Scenic Drives" that is worth taking a look at. myscenicdrives.com is advertising itself as "a single destination for all your road trip planning, now with online reservations for hotels, cars, flights."
For the states listed above, you can look at the list of scenic rides / drives and start making plans, or a make a split-second decision to turn off the six-lane concrete slab you're riding on. (Please signal first, okay?) Each route has a detailed text description, mileage, duration (at legal speeds), seasons in which the route is scenic, a list of the roadways on the recommended route, points along the way with services (gas, food, overnight accomodations), and a user rating.
The site is pretty easy to use and they have a light-weight mobile version for smartphones. You can download a map or send a text message to your smartphone.
Here are the routes identified for California: Northern Pacific Coast, Mt. Shasta - Cascade Loop, Lake Tahoe Loop, Death Valley Byway, Ebbetts Pass Scenic Byway, Yosemite Valley and Tioga Road, Rim of the World, and Joshua Tree Journey.
You can find the nearest route to a location you designate, or have the application use your GPS coordinates.
Just got back from a great ride and want to tell everyone about it? You can suggest it to the folks at My Scenic Drives. They are looking for routes that will result in ear-to-ear grinning admiration of what Mother Nature can do.
As for the California route called Ebbetts Pass - I've never heard of it, nor of Rim of the World. Both are on my list now. The other California routes I can personally vouchsafe as good, if not great scenic rides.
Enjoy!
